Rhode Island Bissells

A Revision of Appendix B: The Rhode Island Line
from Edward Payson Jones' Bissell Genealogy

Version 1.0, October 1999

compiled by Roger E. Bissell

Introductory notes:

In the 1920s, Katherine Cox Gottschalk and Fannie T. Brown established that the Rhode Island Bissells were descended not from one of the grandsons of Captain John Bissell (founder of the Connecticut Bissell family), but instead from another line that migrated from England to Rhode Island in 1707. Edward Payson Jones was sufficiently convinced of the soundness of their case for the British roots of the Rhode Island Bissell family that he included the Gottschalk/Brown listing as an appendix to his 1939 genealogy of the descendants of Capt. John Bissell and removed the portion of his own manuscript showing the Rhode Island family to be an offshoot of the Connecticut clan.

The path-breaking Gottschalk/Brown compilation (see the facsimile by clicking on this link: RhodeIslandOriginal) has itself now been superceded by this extensive revision, which involves renumbering of the Rhode Island Bissells, as well as a correction of the ancestry of #2, Thomas Bissell. Thomas' father was probably not Samuel Bissell b. 1623 (as claimed by Gottschalk/Brown) but instead most likely John Bissell b. 1611. John's father was William Bissell b. 1583, his father being William Bissell b. ca. 1560, who was probably a son of John Bysselle, an emigre from the Alsace-Lorraine region of France following the persecution of Huguenots during the Purge of St. Bartholomew about 1570. If this is correct, then William b. 1583 (grandfather of Thomas b. 1643, the founder of the Rhode Island family) was probably a first cousin of Captain John Bissell b. 1590, the founder of the Connecticut Bissell family.

Since there is room for disputing the ancestry of Thomas b. 1643, and since it was he and not his father who founded the Rhode Island Bissells, the renumbering of the Rhode Island family begins with him (Thomas), rather than with his father (either Samuel b. 1623, as originally theorized by Gottschalk/Brown, or, more likely, John b. 1611). The ancestors of Thomas b. 1643 will be shown with upper and lower case Roman numerals, while his descendants will be shown with Arabic numerals. The descendant numbers in the original (Gottschalk/Brown) compilation appear in brackets following the new numbers assigned for this compilation.

The new material in the revision consists for the most part of additions and minor corrections, but also several people Gottschalk/Brown located in the wrong line and/or generation have been properly relocated. The alert reader will note these discrepancies from the original -- and may also wish to consult my analysis of certain Gottschalk/Brown errors by clicking on this link: Corrected Genealogy for Samuel Bissell of Hartwick, New York. Furthermore, since this revision is intended to be a "living" compilation, the numbers not in brackets are subject to change as new data of birth order and additional descendants are discovered. Each subsequent revision of this compilation will be posted as a new Internet document, with its own date and version number, as above.
